Edward Leonard Chiles (68) of Jersey City passed away March
26,2015 in Jersey City. He was the youngest child born to the late
Bishop Odia Rea Chiles and Mary Ella Andrews-Chiles . Leonard as he
was affectionally called by his family, attended and graduated from
James J. Ferris High School in Jersey City, New Jersey in 1966. On April
23, 1966 he married his high school sweetheart Ruth Phillips.
His professional career consist of working for the New Jersey Railroad
followed by owning his own variety shop located in Jersey City called
“The Unique Shop”. Edward was employed for the United States Postal
Service for 15 years. Mr. Chiles always loved working with his hands. As
a result, he became an independent satellite installer, which inspired
him to earn his license as a Master Electrician. Edward loved giving back
to the community; he created the Hudson City Contractors Association.
This Association formed a school, which gave ex-offenders and the
underserved population of Hudson County the opportunity to become
skilled tradesman and women. Leonard was also a New Jersey State
Assembly Member for many years.
Ed’s favorite past times were
assembling model cars, riding his motorcycle, going for long car rides,
playing the bass guitar, singing, dancing, traveling, and attending shows
at the theater, and enjoying the outdoors. He was also a member of the
singing group called “Muchie and the Novation’s” with his sister Majorie Chiles in the 1970s
Edward Leonard Chiles lived a full life and loved his family. He leaves to
cherish his loving memory his beloved wife Ruth, daughters Lori
“Candy” Chiles, Shamar Chiles-Darden (son in law Granger Darden), and
youngest child Zenneia Chiles. His surviving siblings Walter Chiles
(sister in law Helen), Marian Deadwyler, Betty Golden, Juanita Saunders,
and Gloria Lennon. Predeceased siblings, oldest brother Odia Rae Chiles,
Jr., and sister Fumilayo B Tumpe (Marjorie Chiles). Grandchildren
Charlette Chiles, Kadeem Edward Chiles, Deja Williams, Tyrea Wright,
Zayden Chiles-Venable, Zahier Chiles and Saniya Chiles. Great grandson
Deon Chiles, and a host of other loving relatives and friends.
